Goatville

In the late 1880s, the whole area extending from State Street to Orange Street between Edwards Street and Clark Street was dubbed “Goatville” because many of the Irish immigrants kept goats. Used by outsiders, the nickname carried a slight, contemptuous tone at first, but the natives soon adopted it as a term of affection. On certain occasions, goats could get into fermented eats, and there would be crooked goats wandering the neighborhood.
